Well, as odd as the survey is, it's true.
In EQ if you play a female character (if you are male or female IRL) you get free shit from male characters and definitely treated differently.
Same goes for DAoC IMO.
I think female players assume all players are male unless told differently (at least I do) and male players may assume the same thing but they hold on to that 5% chance that it's a female player and then that extra 1% that she may cybor him in the future.

Wait. So what was the percentage chance that she turns out to be a real live girl, she'll cyb0r, and then she'll come to vegas, get drunk, be really rich, and easy, oh, and hot too, and with few diseases, and really flexible?

The study was done in my home town at Cal State Fullerton. A pretty dumb analysis considering that most of those people buying are males, and thus would want to buy male characters.
