Mac Question

Postby Mourningblade » Tue Mar 18, 2008 5:22 pm

Alright, my old computer is starting to act up and i'm thinking of replacing it and its all Macs where I work, so I'm looking into buying one as a replacement.

Question: What are the gaming prospects like for a Mac? I think WoW is playable with a Mac, but I'm also looking to the future.

I really like the iDVD, and iMovie and some of the other wacky little "i" features but don't want to get cornholed when the next big game comes out.

Any suggestions/comments/rants would be appreciated because I honestly don't know much about these comps other than they are pretty good to work with.

Thanks

JJ

It's like trying to buy games for windows 98. Except you get free coffee at starbucks if you'll just hang out there with your macbook pro.

They also come with a free set of thick-framed glasses.

wow will run fine on macs. But if you are looking at playing games in the future, it just won't work. To my knowledge you can't replace processors or vid cards, maybe more. I could be wrong though. The problem is if you want to play demanding games, you are gonna need to upgrade your vid card, processor, etc. at some point and macs just are built for that. So either buy a mac for $2500 last 2 years and buy another one for $2500. Or build a great PC for $1500 and do a few upgrades for $200-600 over 4-5 years.

i think you can also get a PC(custom) and if you buy the right processor, i think you can actually install leopard on it. And have a MAC running at PC power. with bootcamp to run your games

Follow up Question

With regards to a new PC

Microsoft Vista vs. Windows XP?

Looking at the whole build a computer online thing and was wondering what the experts thought.

Again, I don't know anything about Vista and win xp has worked ok for me.

Thoughts?

Your probably going to want Vista for DirectX 10 game capability.

It's resource intensive so I would recommend min 2GB of memory and a dual core CPU.

I find Vista to be a giant annoying bloated turd but thats jut my opinion.

I 2nd this!.

Vista can be a bitch to work with at times. Biggest upside is that it doesn't crash half as much as Xp does. :sleepy:

eXPerience makes the finest precompiled scripted Windows installs I have ever seen on the scene. I have gone off his work so make my own custom installs. Check out his forums here.

http://forum.retestrak.nl/viewforum.php?f=153

and his piratebay username here.

Some of his OS installs are 10min with full updates, tweaks, you name it.

Alright, since I'm bored at work and looking at s few different specs for my future PC, what are your opinions on the following:

Looking at a nVidia GeForce 8800 GT 512MB video card....Thoughts?

also have the option of adding an AGEIA® PhysX® physics accelerator. My question is, what the hell is this and do I need it now/in the future?

Thanks again in advance for any helpful insights you guys can give me.

JJ

Of course, you could use the money to pay your tuition at UO... they aren't too expensive :bigups:
