NHL Lockout

Postby Twystyd » Thu Sep 16, 2004 4:01 pm

I feel bad for the hockey fans out there. Any thoughts by someone that actualy knows and follows the scene? The league is claiming this could be the end of the NHL.

Sad I enjoy Hockey, I also like minor league Hokey which will be next to impossible to get tickets for during this walk out. No way is this going to result in the end of Hockey.

Well, technically, it could be the end of the NHL : as the owners want a cap, and the players refuse. I can't see anyone really siding with the NHLPA at this point, as a salary cap in sports, especially the NFL are a prime example of how good it works. What would happen is this season would be written off and next year the NHL would be replaced with replacement players - 2% chance of this actually happening.

Most think both the owners and the NHLPA will resolve this sometime around January, and having a half season like in 96. I think thats when the other lockout was. It was bound to happen, and has to happen for the league to actually work. A lockout is actually the best thing for the future of the NHL though, as hopefully cities like Carolina, Miami, Nashville, Columbus, etc will get starved out and retract. The NHL now as a whole is so diluted of talent, the game is not even worth watching - this comming from a kid who grew up as Hockey being a religion.

Winke: If you're referring to the AHL, I doubt it will actually go on as they are the farm teams to the NHL clubs, being owned by the same people and players being under contract with their respected top clubs.

Their are talks of having some 4 on 4 hockey in Canada, which a few stars have signed up for. Otherwise, I guess people will have to deal with Junior Hockey, or for you Americans, College Hockey.

All in all, the lockout was 100% certain for the last couple years, people and players knew it was going to happen and saved up a lot of money to fight it. So, be prepared for either Hockey in January, or no hockey at all this year.

Btw Law, the idea of the end of the NHL is comming from one key point: No league of sports has ever voted for a salary cap, it has always been forced upon them. The NHL will always exist, just not as presently seen.

Well, I can understand why the players do not want a cap but in this day and age its needed for sporting orginazations IMO. Especially when the league lost 1.8 bilion dollars over the last agreement.

Well, the numbers are another reason why players won't agree to a Cap. Both sides have givin numbers, and I forget which sport which came up - maybe it was baseball, that the owners were exaggerting their loses, which brings a whole question about the lose of owners being legitimate or not.

Its a Business, and as most people know, greed fits high into that equation.

I'll buy that. I'm sure the owners are giving the numbers they want the public to see so they can sell their side.

ESPN reports, over 150 NHL players have signed up for other leagues. It's going to get pretty nasty.
