GW opinions?
Have GW pre-order still to pickup from EB but monitor blew last week and the thought of gaming on my backup 17" just doesn't appeal to me ... getting me new one next week.
What's the consensus on this game so far?
Cheers

Depends... if we have a consistent # of people on to form good PvP groups... it will rock.
If people lose interest before we get competitive... may have problems.
If you try to play this game solo you will be frustrated. Random PvP is bad in this game because the game is not balanced for random PvP.
It balanced against rock, paper, scissors. If you don't have a well balanced team to adapt you are done... and random PvP it ends up with rock (aka monk centric teams) winning out all the time. There is very few paper (aka mesmers with the right skills) to counter rocks in random PvP.
There is a bit of a "grind" to get all the skills you want, but it is very minimal compared to the time you'll spend PvPing.
Organized GvsG matches is where it is at. Look forward to us getting organized for some GvsG... hopefully within the next week we'll be out... even if we haven't planned out our group skill set.
I think we will be more leaning towards letting everyone play what they want and letting each others judge what they need to bring into a fight.
Only thing we need to ensure we have is a monk and an anti-monk

alright.. i'm level 6.5 now.
i'm running low on quests to do and frankly the starter world kinda bites.
so i think i might switch over to the new world soon.
I'm a monk/ranger, and my name is killerets thegimp because i am a gimp.
why did i choose those professions? because i'm retarded.
actually b/c the people i'm gonna pvp with told me that their guild already has 5 mesmers. so using my retarded logic, i was like woah... if i'm a ranger, i can do ranged damage without wasting my power.
in the end though, it wasn't that horrible a choice.. i'm finding that i can heal while my pet does damage and basically kill anything in the game, since heals >>> damage in this game.
when I throw on 2 hots (i get a badass hot from ranger skill), i've found i can tank like 7 mobs at once. then i just use the pbae monks get to kill them all slowly, with my pet beating on another, and me just chain healing until my pbae comes back up.
the UI still gets on my nerves, even though I'm getting more used to it. there is no ability to fucking jump.. wtf is this... doom 1? gimme my fucking jump key. and with that said, there really isn'ta good deliniation of where the fucking world boundaries are. i feel like i'm in some training zone with the kiddie bumpers attached to all the bowling gutters.
continued rant.... pve in this game wasn't thought up well at all. it's completely retarded. a level 5 monk shouldn't be able to tank 6 or 7 level 5 mobs at once, and be able to pbae them all to death eventually. because of the bumper system, the pathing is completely retarded. at one point, i found this nice little hill that i was able to shoot all the mobs from, and they couldn't path up the hill, basically making like a "magic rock" from daoc. the escort quests are retarded... i have done 2 of them now, and i got lost or died or went afk or something stupid like that, and when i came back to the town, the quest was completed and they gave me a reward. wtf.... why bother doing escort quests.. just start them, do something else, come back, you win!!!
identifying items is a fixed cost... this is a high fixed cost at starter levels... 100 gold for 25 identifies. that's 4gold each. my unidentified hand axe sells for 1g. my identified hand axe sells for 1g. WTF. how retarded is that. once, i got a precious trinket or whatever that sold for a whopping 10g, but it still hasn't made up for the fact that i've lost money on this identification kit so far. maybe at higher levels, this 4g cost per identify becomes trivial, but at the lower levels, it almost makes no sense to identify items.
ok... there is no way to /who to search for people. you pretty much have to know their name exactly or be in a guild with them. that is retarded. especially when all toons have last names.
like i knew one of my friends was named qrak... but how the fuck could i have guessed his full name would have been qrak railpounder.. i mean come on. on the flipside, everyone would be able to guess killerets thegimp because that's just the way it goes.
More rant... I feel like having only 8 available spells makes the game too "easy". in this sense, i really enjoyed WoW 5man more because the best players mastered every spell in their inventory, and it was a judgement call on what spell to use in what situation. this is now completely dependent on the "meta-game" or whatever is fotm at the moment. i guess some people prefer that. i think its' gay. reminds me of magic the gathering, which i haven't played since 7th grade.
alright.. so i think that's all i have to rant about for now. i'm sticking through until i hit 20 to see how much i'll like pvp. i've heard this game is completely idiocy until post 10 though, so we'll see.

The 8 skill system is great IMO. Makes it more challenging because you can't always rely on having those skills for every situation. You have to plan ahead of time and your group has to be balanced in order to suceed. WoW you can take the best individual gamers and they essentially are the best group players... because well... WoW lacks diversity in all areas when it comes to class break down and group dynamics suffer because of it. A shaman is a shaman is a shaman. Yes some use different totems and weapon buffs... but you still know they will shock every time. You know they will heal if they get the chance. You know exactly their capabilites in each and every fight.
In GW the only class that is given is the Wa/Mo ... I know he is going to charge in and try to tank my entire group. However I don't know if a mesmer is setup for anti-monk, anti-caster, pure damage, self healing, or just a newb with no skills. I don't know if an elementalist is set up for interupts, fast damage, AOE damage, self heal, energy storage, etc.
That makes the end game PvP great.
As far as feeling "overpowered"... yes healing is very overpowered in the early game and in random PvP arenas. Yes healing is >>>> than any damage in game.
However past level 10 and once you get past Yak's Bend in the post searing world... you will run into all kinds of enemies that like to dispel your healing enchants, interupt your heals, and ignore your pet. Every try to heal while backfired? Or have your enchantments removed and then having it do damage to you?
You're in newb land... it is meant to learn the game... not hand you your dinner every time you set out.
I don't agree with monks healing being so strong, but you need to get out of newb land and take another look at the game. Once in Yak's Bend you will not be soloing anything anymore.

^^---- Pretty much agree. Pve in this game to me is like a 1st person RPG. There is a Plot, some minor Pve, and End Game. But unlike a 1st person Rpg when the end credits roll along it's only just begun for PvP.
With 150 diifferent possible skills your character can obtain X 8 people in your grp for a total of 1,200skills with 64 your grp of 8 can bring into battle. Takes FOTM, right out of the picture. It will be knowing different grp builds and strategy. Yea there will always be fotm, but any guild grp build will surly beat a fotm pug anyday.
Guild Wars wasn't designed for carebears or loot whores. You wanna jump around in orgimar with your thumb up your ass waiting for a Loot raid so you can PvP in group some day, go right ahead. Meantime i'll be feeding some koreans and their chicken scratch a good ole fashion american asswhoopin.
oh, and the 14 year old 1337 kiddies can get served too. think you good 1vs1? PLEASE run off solo like a hard ass and PROVE your worth... BOOOO YEAA!!!
HUZZZZAAAAAAAAAAa!

Cause Necros don't make good primaries IMO...
All their skills are good secondary IMO. Life taps and life transfers... all necro line is good for.
All the other main necro skills are reliant on having a group setup to do the same things. Like pet zergs, corpse bombers, etc.
I would say Mo/Mesmer
Always can use monks...
And Mo/Mesmer is currently the BULK of all competitive guilds setups. I was reading through a Hall of Heroes build post on guild-hall.net and there was 3 different groups running 4 Mo/mesmer builds... pretty sad.

yea but a mnk/mesmer combo would be ideal if you wanted heal and interupt casters and debuff. Thats the best choice.
If you want a necro and feel like dishing out dmg War/Necro is the way to go. You can Dot, and tank hella good. Your a good DD tank.
Most people go War/Mnk to heal themselfs, but like any paladin they lack the required tools to dmg anything. Granted if you have 4-5 War/mnks assist training with 4monks it's a sure fire way to outlive anyone. But interupt a monk or two and they will go down fast with DD tanks.

There's only 1 server, you guys can all say hi to them yourselves

I'm still level 6.5, didn't get to play last night. I'm a little more psyched about my mo/ra after reading up a little more on it wed.
it's probably not ideal, but the people i know apparently already have 4 mesmer secondaries, no need for a 5th.
apparently the pet is useless since it's easy to kill and disables me for 8 sec if it dies. but for pve so far, its been nice.
i'm kinda not happy i don't get that disable ability rangers get in their primary (if you interrupt someone with it, that spell is disabled for 20 sec... could be huge since the qbars are only

looking forward to getting that self-bunker+baod ability rangers get too.
still though, the game's pve is complete shit so far. i don't care how you want to massage it or spin it, you can't argue that there are some glaring issues with it. pathing especially. it's just so retarded.. you can walk through a 3 foot high bush, but you can't step over a broken knee high wooden fence. you can walk towards the river's edge but hit an invisible wall 1 ft from the water.
the game doesn't even have a lag meter... when/if you start lagging, the game really fucks up. my roommate threw on a few torrents which slowed my connection down, and my character started warping all over the place, much to my dismay. really freaking annoying.
as for the 8 spell system, yea, this basically dumbs the game down. it leans it towards situational calls, as opposed to on-the-spot calls, which more skilled gamers are more adept at. again, this recalls the whole magic the gathering game. there are 20,000 spells you can pick from, but you can only bring 60 of them to any given fight. there is some skill needed in designing a decent 60 spell combo to win you a tournament, but the bottom line is, given a minimum skill level, all you need to do is memorize what kind of opponents you'll be going against and insert cookie cutter template here. skill involvement = low. they have that problem now. the pros publish a known working 60 spell combo , people copy it, and now all the kiddies and freaking idiots are all playing pro-level decks, merely because mommy and daddy were able to buy them everything they needed. i already see it now. people are posting optimal 8 spell configurations for different scenarios and people are just copying them around. sure, there's skill involved, just like there was still skill involved in playing that magic the gathering game. but it's not the same amount of skill as if you had to learn 80 spells, and be able to pick out which situation to use each of the 80 spells at any given time.
anyways enough of the rant, the main point of my post is that there are a lotta little retarded things they did with this game. i'll hold out hope that the end game is better than this beginning. pvp can make up for a lot.
