Wow, you guys share your credit card bill? Thats pretty trusting.
I live with my GF, but we don't share any of that stuff. We have a joint account that we pay for anything shared from, but it only includes groceries, cable, phone, stuff like that, and we both put money into it.
Some people just don't understand money, and the best way to learn is let them dig their own hole. I spent most of my life in debt, and hate it now. When I got my first "real" job, I stayed living my crappy student apartment with roommates. My GF and I leased a cheap Toyota Echo and just share that since cars are too expensive anyways.
I managed to pay off $35K in student loans in 2 years though instead of dragging it out. 2 years later, we've got enough saved up for a house to get us a really good mortgage rate, and our payments will be low enough that even if one of us looses our jobs, we won't have any trouble making them.
I just hate the idea of being locked into something and feeling trapped. Plus this way we have money to travel and do things, instead of being stuck paying some huge mortgage.
Different people have different levels of stress though, so maybe thats just me
