Arena Points Formulae Released

Blizz has put up the formulae they will be using to calculate arena points at the end of each week:

X = Team Rating, Y = Arena Points
If X>1500: Y = 2894/(1+259*e^(-0.0025*X))
Else: Y = 0.206*X+99

Which generates the following table:

The arena system is similar to the ELO raiting. 2800 is the rating of top players that use the Elo Rating System in other venues while the starting/minimum rating is usually 1000. To explain it as easy as possible:

You start with a rating of 1000. Every team will have this rating when created. When you enter an arena for the first time your opponent will have a similar value (keep in mind there is X-server and you can battle teams from the same faction. This will find a matching team really soon unless you are at the very top of the list already). The battle is finished and new values are calculated. If both teams had the same value, the winner gains 10 points and the other team looses 10 points. If the winning team's rating was higher before the match, they will get less points from the loosing team. If the winning team had the lower rating before the match, they will gain more then 10 points and the others loose the very same value. At the end of the week arena points will be gained, most likely similar to the "ranking points" in the old honor system. These points can be spent on weapons/armor.

About the time sink situation, it will not be the fucked up sliding scale any more. The system matches teams of similar strength. There is no point creation during a game. If you sum up the values of both teams before the match and after the match the result will be the same, unless one team is at the minimum (if you are at 1000 points and you loose, you wont loose any points. you cant be rated lower then any starting team). We expect their to be some chaos, because every team starts with 1000 points. But the good teams will very soon reach 1400, 1600 or even higher ratings, and average teams will not face them any more. It might take some time until the system really works, but then it should work pretty well. It may be a good idea for you raiders or anyone used to slower gameplay to hold off until the best pvp teams break off.

Blizzards announcement that the best teams will only play their absolute minimum in games is a refreshing change to the current system. Every time you enter the arena you face a team with a similar rating, in a similar position and with similar dedication and skill to pvp. Unless you want the Armored Netherdrake badly, most high ranked teams wont do more games then required, when the risk to loose is as high as the chance to win. Imagine you are one of the 5 highest ranked teams on your server. You will get enough arena points every week that you can get the full set and all weapons in no time. Given the current point costs shown on Thott, it will take the top team five weeks to get a full set of armor plus a 2h or two 1h (or maybe 2-3 weeks longer since it will take a little while for a team to increase its rating). Meanwhile, the worst team will be able to buy a 2h after about three months.
